"It is dreadfully hard for me to get my friends to understand just what the ranch means to me…From a utilitarian standpoint I hope to do two things with the ranch: (1) To leave the land better for my having been; (2) and to enable thirty or forty families to live happily on ground that was so impoverished that an average of three farmers went bankrupt on each of the five ranches I have run together…"

The Winery Ruins

Winery Ruins
Winery Ruins

The main Kohler and Frohling winery building was heavily damaged in the 1906 earthquake. London used the foundation and part of the upper story that could be salvaged and built an upper story wooden building which was used as a carriage house, living quarters for ranch hands, rooms for his many guests and an office where his sister, Eliza Shepard, could manage the ranch. A fire destroyed the upper levels in 1965.

Today the Ruins are home to Broadway Under the Stars which presents summer theatre and concerts. Over 800 guests can enjoy showsprivate events and social gatherings in the beautiful setting looking out over vineyards, the ranch, and Sonoma Mountain in the Valley of the Moon.
