Essentially autobiographical, Jack London's 1913 novel deals with the demons of alcohol that he fought most of his life. The name is taken from an old British folksong about alcohol. The story follows Jack from his early years as a sailor though his career as a successful writer. He describes the positive moments related to alcohol but also the despair brought by succumbing to its power.
