Celebrate with Us!
As part of our Call of the Wild Weekend, take a hike to celebrate the reopening of the Vineyard Trail! Closed since December 3, 2021, this vital link to the Ancient Redwood will reopen on May 14, 2022, starting with the ribbon-cutting at 9:30 am. Be one of the first to hike on the restored trail with a guided hike leaving the trailhead at 10:00 am for the Ancient Redwood with an optional extension to the orchard and back.
Many parks throughout the state have trails that started as fire roads, logging roads, and even animal trails, which were later converted to hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. These trails are seldom designed with sustainability in mind, and can often have major issues with drainage and erosion. Jack London State Historic Park is no exception, with one of the most damaged trails being the popular Vineyard Trail. Thankfully a major trail repair and restoration on Vineyard Trail is underway. Funded by Prop 64, which included among other things cannabis tax money for State Parks to help improve access, the Vineyard Trail repair not only fixes ongoing issues which have regularly closed the trail down in wetter months but improves the visitor experience and allows for maintenance and emergency off-road vehicles to more easily access the southern portion of the park. The work, headed up by State Parks Bay Area District Road and Trails Chief Mike Nelson, will run through May 15th and include stone steps, armored crossings, and a wooden boardwalk. A State Parks Trails crew and the California Conservation Corps team are helping with the project.
Bring water, hiking poles, a snack, dress in layers, and wear sturdy shoes.
