Join historical ecologist Angela Nardo-Morgan for a look at the early history of what became the Sonoma Developmental Center, from its origins in the late 19th century to it’s closure.
The presentation will explore the founding of the institution at Eldridge in 1891, its development and changing philosophies of care, and the important role it played in shaping the surrounding Glen Ellen community. The program will also consider the broader history of the area during the lifetimes of Jack and Charmian London, including the institution’s proximity to London’s Beauty Ranch.
This presentation offers an opportunity to learn more about an important chapter in Sonoma Valley history and the people and community connected to the institution over its early decades.

Presented by Angela Nardo-Morgan
Angela Nardo-Morgan is the Director of Development for Marine Conservation Institute and Board Chair of the Glen Ellen Historical Society. A longtime Glen Ellen resident, she has lived and raised her family in the community for more than 30 years and previously served for five years on the Sonoma Valley Municipal Advisory Council, representing Kenwood, Glen Ellen, and Eldridge.
Angela holds a graduate degree in Restoration and Historical Ecology and has taught Environmental Studies at Sonoma State University and Climate Change through UC Berkeley Extension. Her career has included environmental restoration, conservation, and research throughout California, with organizations including Sonoma Ecology Center, Russian Riverkeeper, Audubon Canyon Ranch, and the Marine Mammal Center.
Her longstanding involvement in local history and deep connection to the Glen Ellen and Eldridge communities have fueled her interest in the history of the Sonoma Developmental Center and its place in Sonoma Valley.
