Women’s History Month Event

Part 1:

ELIZA SHEPARD-JACK LONDON’S SILENT PARTNER

This talk will feature the backstory of Beauty Ranch, starring Eliza Shepard, Jack London’s step-sister, who became his bookkeeper, lawyer, contractor, and ranch manager, while also championing women’s and veterans’ rights as an activist and community leader. Letters and telegrams between Jack and Eliza and Eliza and Charmian will bring to life the energy and diligence required to build and then secure the amazing Beauty Ranch

Surprise revelations and quirky details bring Eliza to life, a no-nonsense woman who preferred not to be photographed and eschewed the limelight.

Presented by Elisa Stancil Levine, author of the book Jack London State Historic Park (available at venue and bookstore), researched Eliza’s life beginning in 2005. “As a volunteer at the park, I became fascinated by Eliza, her tireless efforts, her history, and her personality. Without Eliza, we would not have the park today.”

Part 2

ELIZA SHEPARD – MATRIARCH OF THE SHEPARD FAMILY

Although Eliza died in September 1939 her legacy continues. Her son Irving continued her work at the Ranch and his descendants own and manage the 160 acres,120 in vineyards, that surround the park. Learn more about Eliza from the family’s point of view in this intimate conversation with her great-grandson Brian Shepard. Elisa Stancil Levine will continue the conversation with a fireside chat with Brian on a trip down memory lane as he recalls some of the Eliza stories handed down over the years.

Refreshments will be served during intermission in the portico.

Note: Limited seating is available. The event space is reached by a stairway.  For more information about accessibility, please call (707) 938-5216
