Join us at the park as we honor Women’s History Month by exploring the life of Eliza Shepard, an extraordinary woman and the cherished stepsister of author Jack London. Eliza played a vital role in the success of Beauty Ranch, where she served as ranch manager, bookkeeper, and contractor, ensuring the smooth operation of Jack’s beloved property.
Beyond her support of Jack’s work, Eliza was a trailblazer in her own right and an influential community leader. As an activist, she advocated for women’s and veterans’ rights. She was a dedicated member of the Women’s Relief Corps and worked to engage women in political action. Though she preferred to stay out of the limelight, Eliza’s no-nonsense approach to her work left a lasting legacy that continues to resonate today.
This event is presented by Elisa Stancil Levine, author of Jack London State Historic Park (available at the museum bookstore). Elisa has been researching Eliza’s life since 2005. “As a volunteer at the park, I became captivated by Eliza’s dedication, her history, and her remarkable character. Without Eliza, we wouldn’t have the park we cherish today.”
Light refreshments will be served after the event under the museum portico.
