The Historic Orchard was annexed to Jack London State Historic Park in 2001 as part of a 600-acre transfer from the Sonoma Developmental Center. Many rare varieties of fruit-bearing trees are still producing in this once 100-acre orchard, including pears, apricots, prunes, plums, and apples. The orchard was part of a working farm, managed in part by residents of the Sonoma Development Center. The dairy, canning, gardening and fruit growing operations ceased when state funding changed the nature of the Center.
There are a variety of ways to reach the Historic Orchard from the upper ranch parking lot. Start by heading to Jack London’s Lake via the Lake Service Road. Once at the Lake, take Vineyard Trail across Asbury Creek all the way to the orchard, stopping to see the Ancient Redwood of course. Alternatively, for a longer trip, from the Lake head up Sonoma Mountain trail and take Old Fallen Bridge Trail or Upper Fallen Bridge Trail to New Fallen Bridge Trail, which will take you to the orchard.
Distance, Category and Difficulty
- 4 to 7 miles or more. Moderate with some strenuous uphills. A 400 foot elevation gain from 600 to 1000 ft.
- Trail traffic: Horses, bikes, hikers. Dogs are not allowed on any back-country trails in the Park.
- Trail surfaces: Varied, some wet areas in winter and spring.
- Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours.
- Season: All seasons.
- Features: There are bathrooms in the small cabin camp area. Picnic tables and potable water faucet.
