"The Green Tour is spectacular! I can’t imagine a more wonderful way to spend time exploring the gorgeous and historic wine country of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County, one of my favorite regions in northern California. Led by knowledgable and engaging guides, two friends from New Jersey and I recently enjoyed a memorable day there, starting in the magnificent Quarryhill Botanical Gardens, learning all about its extraordinary efforts to preserve endangered plants from Asia. We then received an insider’s look into the larger-than-life legacies of famed author and pioneering farmer and rancher, Jack London, on the grounds of his beloved “Beauty Ranch” which is now a State Park that bears his name. We ended the day with a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the lovely landscapes carefully cultivated by the innovative Benziger Family Winery, long and deeply committed to farming and wine-making in harmony with nature. Along the way, we savored the flavors of the land in the fine wine it produces and toasted a tour we won’t soon forget. I urge everyone interested in celebrating nature and people who nurture it and the historic roots of Glen Ellen to take the Green Tour. Have fun! You can’t miss."
10:30 am begin the tour at Quarryhill Botanical Garden with a docent-led tour of Sonoma Valley's secret garden and explore 25 acres of 20,000 wild-origin plants and flowers. Quarryhill is a woodland garden cradled in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. Winding gravel paths pass among flowering shrubs and exotic trees, by tranquil ponds and seasonal waterfalls, and over gently rolling hills planted with rare and endangered species grown from seed, wild-collected in East Asia.
12:00 pm continue the tour at Jack London State Historic Park. According to Jack London's credo, "the function of a man is to live, not exist." When you visit Jack London State Historic Park you will discover what the author of Call of the Wild packed into 40 short years. War reporter, gold prospector, social reformer and world famous novelist, a desire to connect with the natural world brought London to Glen Ellen where he devoted himself to the redemption of the land. His improvements were at the forefront of sustainable agriculture. This portion of the tour includes a picnic lunch followed by a docent-led tour about the farming practices of the Beauty Ranch and cottage where he and his wife Charmian lived.
2:00 pm finish the tour at Benziger Family Winery. Enjoy a close-up look at their Biodynamic vineyards, visit the fermentation facility, crush pad, and explore the barrel caves. The Biodynamic wine tour is approximately 45 minute, including a special tasting of the Benziger award-winning wines.
