Wildflowers 101-Not Just a Pretty Face! (Part 2)

We will hold the wildflower walk tomorrow morning, rain or shine. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Should be a fun, refreshing walk!

 

In a continuation of the popular March class, we will put a spring in your step as we search the shady forest and sunny grasslands for April blooms, as well as discuss tips for identifying the park’s wildflowers and how to recognize at least five common plant families. We will start with a brief discussion at an illustrative display table with wildflower field guides and specimens, and provide handouts before starting the walk.

Hike Leader Carolyn Greene is an endlessly curious general naturalist, who has been observing, pondering, and asking questions about botanical wonders, for decades.  She will emphasize patterns, purposes, and even smells of our native plants, and how they might look through the five eyes of our native bees.  Her undergraduate degree is in biogeography from U.C., with a specialty in botany. She has worked as a field biologist, conducting wildlife, plant, and restoration research for the past 25 years, for local parks, for the California State Parks system, and for the U.S. National Park Service. Carolyn is also a certified California Naturalist and “Cal Nat” trainer.

Expect about 3 miles of leisurely-paced hiking with some elevation gain. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a snack, water, hiking poles (optional), dress in layers, and plan on a wonderful hike.
