Hiking For Fitness

You can enjoy the outdoors and get back into shape at the same time. Our Hiking For Fitness series of 6 classes is designed to help you get fit, while making new friends and having fun. You will learn the basics of hiking and how to get the most from your hike from REI, plus how to use yoga and mindfulness to enhance your outdoor experience. Each week we will gradually increase the length and difficulty of our guided hike until at  week 6 we celebrate at the top of the Park!

The benefits of a good hike, physically and mentally are incredible plus makes a wonderful present you can give to yourself.

  • Improved cardio-respiratory fitness (heart, lungs, blood vessels)
  • Improved muscular fitness
  • Lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
  • Lower risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
  • Lower risk of high cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Lower risk of colon and breast cancer, and possibly lung and endometrial cancer
  • Increased bone density or a slower loss of density
  • Reduced depression and better quality sleep
  • Lower risk of early death (If you are active for 7 hours a week, your risk of dying early is 40% lower than someone active for less than 30 minutes a week.)
  • Weight control; hiking burns up 370 calories an hour (154-lb person)

Sign up for classes that will fit your schedule or you can sign up for all 6 classes and when you reach the summit of the Park you'll receive a prize. So start your summer off on the right foot, see the park and make new friends!
