Hiking For Fitness

You can enjoy the outdoors and get back into shape at the same time. Our Hiking For Fitness series classes is designed to help you get fit, while making new friends and having fun. You will learn the basics of hiking and how to get the most from your hike from REI, plus how to use yoga and mindfulness to enhance your outdoor experience. Each week we will gradually increase the length and difficulty of our guided hike until at week 6 we celebrate at the top of the Park! 

The benefits of a good hike, physically and mentally are incredible plus makes a wonderful present you can give to yourself.

  • Improved cardio-respiratory fitness (heart, lungs, blood vessels)
  • Improved muscular fitness
  • Lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
  • Lower risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
  • Lower risk of high cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Lower risk of colon and breast cancer, and possibly lung and endometrial cancer
  • Increased bone density or a slower loss of density
  • Reduced depression and better quality sleep
  • Lower risk of early death (If you are active for 7 hours a week, your risk of dying early is 40% lower than someone active for less than 30 minutes a week.)
  • Weight control; hiking burns up 370 calories an hour (154-lb person)

Sign up for classes that will fit your schedule or you can sign up for all 6 classes and when you reach the summit of the Park you'll receive a prize. So start your summer off on the right foot, see the park and make new friends!

Introduction and series overview followed by Hiking Basics presented by REI. We will finish with an easy guided hike. 

June 10

Stretching with Dawn Justice and guided hike with Jeff Falconer

June 17

A hike to the Ancient Redwood where yoga instructor Dawn Justice will show us how to incorporate yoga into a hike 

June 24

Mindfulness and and guided hike with Jeff Falconer

July 8

Nature hike on the Sonoma Ridge Trail

July 15

Graduation hike to the summit of the park with John Lynch!



Class sizes are limited so don’t wait.

When: 8:30 - 12:00 am (ending time may vary with hike)
Where: 2400 London Ranch Road, Glen Ellen. Meet in the ranch parking lot (turn right as you enter the park)
Cost: Each hike costs $15, which includes parking

Note: hikes will be on uneven terrain with varying degrees of elevation gain and loss. You may want to consult a physician before starting this series of hikes.
